Will Smith’s slap is still a topic of discussion. While many continue to discuss what happened, others discuss what WOULD have happened if he had put his hands on someone other than Chris Rock.
Rock has largely taken the incident in stride and has used it to fuel his tour Ego Death earlier this year. Many other comedians have come forward with their own jokes and opinions on what happened that night, from Jazzy Jeff to Martin Lawrence. The latest is television and film icon, Damon Wayans.
Dj Jazzy Jeff is one of Will Smith’s oldest friends. The pair got their start together in music before venturing off into television together. Jeff knows Will very well, and following the slap, he opened up, sharing his opinion on what happened.
Jeff feels that Will’s actions were the result of a very rare lapse of judgment by the Fresh Prince. Jeff says he could have named 50 other times Will should have slapped someone, and he did not. Jeff argues that much of the criticism Will is facing has more to do with people not understanding that he’s human.
Will Smith is a megastar and always has a project in the pipeline. He’s the face of several big franchises, including Bad Boys. Will and Martin Lawrence are a dream team in the Miami-based buddy cop film. It was reported that several Smith lead projects could be scrapped following his Oscar incident, but Lawrence assures fans that Bad Boys 4 will not be one of them.
While discussing it with Ebony Magazine, Lawrence confirmed that they’ve got at least one more Bad Boys film in the making. Martin credits the film for changing both his and Will’s careers. “For us to come together and prove that we can deliver, and we can pull people into the box office—that two Black stars, two sitcom stars, could make money at the box office [was huge].”
The CEO of Sony also commented on the upcoming film and said, “I’ve known Will Smith for many years, and I know him to be a good person. That was an example of a very good person having a very bad moment in front of the world. I believe his apology and regret are genuine, and I believe in forgiveness and redemption.”
Wanda Sykes was the host of this year’s Oscars and has been very open about how hard it was for her to pull it together and keep hosting following the slap. “It took a lot of people to clean me up,” she admits. Wanda recently stopped by The Kelly & Ryan Show and discussed how shocked she was. Wanda was even more upset at how quickly the show continued and how Will Smith was allowed to stay. “I keep peaking behind the curtains like ‘he still sitting here!?’” Sykes was there to promote an upcoming season of her series, The Upshaws.
Damon Wayans sat down with the Ebro In The Morning Show to discuss his career. During the interview, he opened up on his thoughts following the Will Smith/Chris Rock slap. Wayans admits that he would still be fighting Will Smith to this day. “We’d still be fighting. What’s today? I’d beat up his wife. I’d beat up his kid.” Damon says that he keeps a baseball bat on his stage for this exact reason because people like to rush the stages and create viral moments. “It’s in my rider. People think it’s funny to get on stage, and they gone get a meme? We all gon have a meme.” He goes on to say, “you don’t slap me for telling jokes, that’s unacceptable.”
Damon argues that Will’s demeanor prior to the slap was “happy go lucky,” so he does not understand where the energy came from. He also argues that 50 Cent and other people have made fun of Jada Pinkett Smith with no consequences. “He didn’t slap 50 Cent, he slapped 50lbs!” He says that Chris Rock is a small guy and an easy target. Damon jokes he would have rather seen Jada slap Chris because it would be a more fair fight.
Kevin Hart recently spoke out in defense of his friend Will, stating that the Fresh Prince is in a much better place four months later. “Will is apologetic, you know. He’s in a better space, of course than what he was after. People are human, and as humans, sometimes we make mistakes. So it’s not about talking about the past; it’s about acknowledging the present and doing your best to move forward.”
